Locusts

چکیده
Although locusts are so destructive to the results of human agricultural industry, and although their presence must be regarded, at least in all cultivated countries, as a calamity of grave and serious import, their presence is, nevertheless, the opportunity of jubilee to various species of the lower creation. First, appears the inevitable crow, with his hop, jump, and caw, surfeiting himself on locusts, until he becomcs a miserable specimen of the genus Corvus,?presenting, with downcast head and ruffled feathers, a not. unapt illustration of the sufferings and evils of a gluttonish dyspepsia. Then, there are troops of minas, chattering along and making themselves scarcely less " seedy" than their neighbour, the crow. At a

Phenotypic Transformation Affects Associative Learning in the Desert Locust
In desert locusts, increased population densities drive phenotypic transformation from the solitarious to the gregarious phase within a generation [1-4]. Here we show that when presented with odor-food associations, the two extreme phases differ in aversive but not appetitive associative learning, with solitarious locusts showing a conditioned aversion more quickly than gregarious locusts. The ...
متن کاملNeural correlates to flight-related density-dependent phase characteristics in locusts.
Locust phase polymorphism is an extreme example of behavioral plasticity; in response to changes in population density, locusts dramatically alter their behavior. These changes in behavior facilitate the appearance of various morphological and physiological phase characteristics. One of the principal behavioral changes is the more intense flight behavior and improved flight performance of grega...
متن کاملSusceptibility to experimental infection of the invertebrate locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) with the apicomplexan parasite Neospora caninum
Neuropathogenesis is a feature of Neospora caninum infection. In order to explore this in the absence of acquired host immunity to the parasite, we have tested infection in locusts (Schistocerca gregaria). We show for the first time that locusts are permissive to intra-hemocoel infection with N. caninum tachyzoites. This was characterized by alteration in body weight, fecal output, hemoparasite...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal receptive field properties of a looming-sensitive neuron in solitarious and gregarious phases of the desert locust.
Desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) can transform reversibly between the swarming gregarious phase and a solitarious phase, which avoids other locusts. This transformation entails dramatic changes in morphology, physiology, and behavior. We have used the lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) and its postsynaptic target, the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD), which are visual ...
متن کاملOctopamine and tyramine respectively regulate attractive and repulsive behavior in locust phase changes
Aggregative and solitary behaviors are universal phenomena in animals. Interestingly, locusts (Locusta migratoria) can reversibly transit their behavior between gregarious and solitary phase through conspecific attraction and repulsion. However, the regulatory mechanism of neurotransmitters underlying attraction and repulsion among locusts remains unknown. In this study, we found gregarious and...
متن کاملMotor neurone responses during a postural reflex in solitarious and gregarious desert locusts.
Desert locusts show extreme phenotypic plasticity and can change reversibly between two phases that differ radically in morphology, physiology and behaviour. Solitarious locusts are cryptic in appearance and behaviour, walking slowly with the body held close to the ground. Gregarious locusts are conspicuous in appearance and much more active, walking rapidly with the body held well above the gr...
